Dashboard sidebar link visible to unauthorised users

Dashboard sidebar link visible to unauthorised users

Issue

A user who does not have permission to view a specific dashboard still sees a sidebar link to it in their navigation menu.

Cause

This can occur if the dashboard audience settings or associated rules have become out of sync(cache) with the user's permissions.

Solution

To resolve this issue, follow the steps below:

  1. Update the Dashboard Audience

    • Go to the Dashboard Settings.

    • Remove all audiences currently assigned to the dashboard.

    • Save the changes.

    • Re-add the appropriate audiences.

    • Save the settings again.

  2. Check for Linked Rules

    • If the dashboard is linked to a Landing page rule

    • Delete the rule temporarily.

      • Make the necessary changes to the dashboard’s audience settings as outlined above.

      • Recreate or re-add the rule once the dashboard settings have been updated.

  3. User Action Required

    • Ask affected users to log out and log back in to see the changes.

Important Notes

  • Changes to dashboard visibility may not reflect immediately in a user’s session. Logging out and back in ensures the new permissions and navigation links are applied.

  • Always verify the correct audiences are re-added before restoring any linked landing page rule. Possibly noting down the audience or taking a screenshot.
